GESUALDO CONSORT

"At last, Gesualdo as I always imagined him sounding..."

DIRECTOR WERNER HERZOG

THE CONSORT made their London debut at the Wigmore Hall in 1978, and since then have devoted themselves to performing some of the most challenging music suitable for vocal ensemble.

This has led to their presenting very varied and unusual programmes embracing, for example, both Monteverdi and Verdi and extending to include mediaeval song and a wide range of 20th century music. At the same time they have maintained a special interest in the music of Gesualdo and his contemporaries.

Their debut recording, now re-released by ASV was a Gramophone Critic's Choice selection, and the musicologist Glen Watkins described the recording as "a miracle: easily the best Gesualdo performance to date." Most recently they collaborated with German director Werner Herzog on his film biography of Gesualdo "Death for Five Voices".
