The
"Bridge" was originally a wooden structure
over the river Calder, but the "new" stone
bridge - the one in use today - was built in 1510.
The
mills and their smoking chimneys are a thing of the past,
but in their heyday they were producing corduroy, worsteds and
moleskin for customers around the world.
Old
Mills and workshops along the canal are now home to art and
craft galleries, shops and restaurants. For the visitor,
there is a wide choice of tearooms, pubs and restaurants.
Horse-drawn canal trips run from the canal wharf (Calder Valley Cruising 01422 845557), and the
National Trust's Hardcastle
Crags are only a few minutes away. |
