1860s Harmonium by Merklin-Schutz of Brussels and Paris |
The development of free reed instruments took a giant leap forward with the introduction of the Harmonium and the Reed Organ.
These two keyboard instruments are related to the mouth organ and accordion as well as other lesser-known reed instruments, such as the Chinese
Sheng.
During the 19th Century in Great Britain they were used in churches, chapels and in the home.
|
|
In the British Empire, small versions were carried from place to place by missionaries and military chaplains.
It is no coincidence that two of the builders of the finest 19th Century pipe organs, Frenchman Aristide Cavaillé-Coll and Englishman "Father" Henry Willis had both been involved in the making of Harmoniums in their formative years.
The popularity of the reed organ and the harmonium is seeing a resurgence. Annie Lennox used a harmonium in her concert for MTV's Unplugged series, and musicians are
again seeing the value of reed organs as instruments in their own right. |
|
To meet the present demand, The Reed Organ & Harmonium Workshop offers a sales, spares and repair service.
The smallest instrument restored was a two octave portable reed organ, and the largest current project is a two manual and pedal reed organ will a pitch range down to 16ft.
